English 4 Academy


Eligibility

You are eligible to take the English 4 Academy if you tested into English 4 on the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam.

In order to participate in HESA, you must enroll in a primary course AND a secondary course (HIST 015 OR ENG 008).  Only enrolling in one course will result in you being dropped from the program completely.

1. ENGL 004 (5 units)

English Writing Lecture 

Covers ground rules of academic inquiry and exchange in English writing. Students who pass the course with a grade of "C" or better satisfy the University of California Entry Level Writing Requirement and will be eligible to enroll in ENGL 001A.

  • ENGL 004D - English Writing Discussion Section (1 unit)

Focuses on critical reading of assigned texts, organizing essays, honing syntax, and asking and answering academic questions. Graded Satisfactory (S) or No Credit (NC).

 

2. HIST 015 (4 units)

World History: 1500 to 1900

Emphasis on the unique characteristics of world cultures as they entered into a critical period of increasing interaction, a process that led to the shaping of the modern world order. Specific themes include religious, economic, and political revolution; the development of modern science; continuity and change in agrarian societies; industrialism; imperialism; and changes in
the patterns of everyday life..

  • HIST 015D - 1500 to 1900 Discussion Section

ENGL 008 (4 Units)

Oral Communications

An introduction to public speaking in genres and for occasions appropriate in the academy and in public forums: classroom and seminar presentations, conference presentations including poster talks and speeches appropriate for public assemblies, debate, and special occasions.

 

3. Early Start Seminar

The Early Start Seminar will emphasize the skills that will help students achieve and prepare for academic and personal success throughout their years here at UCR. This is an interactive class that is geared to help students be successful in their college career.

Please Note: Some students will qualify for a book loan that WILL NOT be distributed until after the academy has started.
